GroupTube – Do it together

Why 2.0?

The 2.0 update is a huge step forward in GroupTube's development. Originally, GroupTube was only a single "watch YouTube together" app. But today GroupTube supports 15+ different "do it together" apps, for entertainment, socializing, or productivity.

It's time to level up the core experience of using GroupTube. Creating a group, opening apps and starting shared activities, and also customizing your experience will be as easy and instinctive as possible moving forward.

Desktop

The desktop version has changed the most. It received a sidebar on the left, where you can access your group, its users and also all open apps. Within groups, you can now expand both the call and chat as separate bars on the left side.

You can switch to your homepage by clicking the GroupTube logo in the sidebar. There you will find your friends, groups, and also news about updates like this one!

Mobile App

The mobile app received a complete overhaul too, bringing in many elements that work well on the desktop version. Its ease of use has increased a lot. All apps are now easily accessible from the tab bar at the bottom, and the sidebar you know from the desktop version is also available via the menu button or gesture (swipe in from the left side).

The horizontal orientation on mobile implements these changes too, making it way easier to navigate GroupTube and see your friends at the same time. Tablets use either the mobile or desktop version, depending on the available screen size.

15+ apps currently supported

GroupTube currently supports 15+ apps in 4 categories, and you can expect new apps to be added soon.

1. Media: YouTube, Twitch, Apple Music
2. Games: Chess, Checkers, Connect Four, Tic Tac Toe, Mill, Coin Flip, Dice Roll
3. Productivity: Whiteboard, Notes, Images, MathPad, Screen Sharing
4. Social: Chat, Voice & Video Call

What's next?

There will be lots more to come to GroupTube in the following months. We strive to create the best app to do things and have fun together with friends.

We have a list of things that we want to add or improve, many of which have been requested by GroupTube users themselves – so if there is anything you want to contribute, please use the feedback feature within the sidebar (top) or settings (bottom).

1. Improve YouTube + Add YouTube Music

• Add separate app for YouTube Music
• Allow creating, saving and customization of multiple playlists
• Show who paused/played
• Show who added video to playlist
• Show sync details (offset time and sync state per user)
• Add drag and drop support in playlist

2. Support more Platforms (Netflix, Spotify, ...)

• Allow watching series on Netflix
• Allow listening to music on Spotify
• Add more platforms depending on demand

3. Friends System + Better Invites

• Allow sending a friend request to a given username
• Allow adding friends directly to a group without an invite
• Add direct messages between users
• Allow invites to point to an app inside a group
• Invites can make you a member of the group
• Allow sending invites directly to friends on GroupTube

4. Improve Chat + Mobile Notifications

• Add replies to messages
• Add emoji reactions to messages
• Improve file attachment support
• Add GIF and sticker support
• Add notifications to the mobile app

5. File Browser and Integration with Apps

• Allow users to upload files of any kind
• Allow GroupTube apps to access, use and modify these files (Notes, Whiteboard, Images, ...)
• Add a file browser app to manage uploads and files

6. Native Desktop App

• Installable as App (Mac, Windows, ...)
• Allow global hotkeys
• Popout windows?

7. More Games

• Ludo (2-4 players)
• Card games (2-6 players)
• Billiards (2 players)
• Battleship (2 players)
